Autistic Disorder

Autistic Disorder, also known as Kanner’s Syndrome, is a disorder that impairs social interaction, interests, and communication abilities. It is thought to be caused by a disruption in the central nervous system although exactly what causes the neurodevelopment disorder is not known. Usually, Autistic Disorder shows up before a child has turned three years of age. Autistic children are known for the tantrums they engage in. Their lack of communication skills makes it impossible and frustrating for them to correspond in any other way. It may be surprising to know that people diagnosed with Autistic Disorder can go on to lead fairly normal or even extraordinary lives. Media depictions of Autistic Disorder have been of rare extreme cases.

There are running debates on every aspect of Autism, from what to call it to how to treat it. Sometimes, Autistic Disorder as well as the closely related Asperger’s Syndrome are viewed on a continuum known as autistic spectrum disorders. Many characteristics of the several different types of Autism overlap and the terms used to describe them are often used interchangeably. Although many argue that Autism is not treatable, therapies such as Applied Behavior Analysis has been shown to help autistic children become more independent. ABA uses a systematic approach to teach skills that are positively reinforced. This type of treatment can take years to be effective but builds essential skills such as dressing oneself, tying shoelaces, going to the bathroom, and knowing how to communicate in a social setting.
